I believe CS Lewis sorted this out in the Abolition of Man. We are gut, brain, and heart. When the gut and brain integrate properly, the heart becomes responsive. Our heart-soul (the chest) develops the correct relationships with God and others. We can think of it as training our brains and bodies to walk in the Way. Our heart-souls follow. Both the body's actions and the brain's thoughts can be detrimental to our soul's development.
